A Look into the Past of the Golden Gate Hotel & Casino
If walls could talk! A lot of history fills the confines of downtown’s Golden Gate Hotel & Casino. This famed property began its journey at the corner of Fremont and Main Street, now the bustling site of the Fremont Street Experience, one hundred and eight years ago and is still standing today! When it opened in 1906, guests were charged a buck a day to stay in a 10’ X 10’ non-air conditioned room. Casino winnings were said to be $5-$100 per day from gamblers. In 1907, the Golden Nugget was the first hotel to go high-tech by installing a phone with the number listed as 1. During the early years of Prohibition, alcoholic drinks were masqueraded in coffee cups in order to keep the customers satisfied with sneaking a drink with no hassle from the law. Today, over a hundred years later, the Golden Gate property remains on of the most affordable places to stay in the downtown area with standard rooms ranging from $39 to $79 a night. Last year, they undertook their first renovation in 50 years by adding 14 luxury suites which are priced from $89-$199 per night. Single bets of $5 to $100 are still welcome throughout the casino and the new high limit room accepts wagers up to $5,000. For room reservations, call (866) 599-6674.
